New National Study Finds Broad Public Support for IVF Access and Insurance Coverage
Nearly three in four Americans support patients’ right to pursue IVF, while almost two-thirds back state-required coverage for fertility treatment

Washington, DC—A new national study finds strong public support for in vitro fertilization (IVF) and for state requirements that insurers cover fertility treatment. The findings underscore the need to protect IVF and make care more affordable and accessible.
The study, “Infertility Prevalence and Public Support for In Vitro Fertilization Policies in the United States,” was published in the Journal of Women’s Health. Researchers analyzed data from a nationally weighted online survey of 1,000 U.S. adults conducted in November 2024.
Nearly three in four respondents, 74.2%, supported the right of patients experiencing infertility to pursue IVF, while nearly two-thirds, 64.6%, supported state laws requiring insurers to cover fertility treatments such as intrauterine insemination (IUI) and IVF.
The study also found that approximately one in 11 U.S. adults, or 8.9%, reported experiencing infertility. Support for IVF access and insurance coverage was especially strong among respondents who had experienced infertility themselves or knew someone who had, reflecting greater awareness of the financial, emotional, and logistical burdens patients face.
Together, the findings reinforce the need to reduce financial barriers at a time when insurance coverage continues to vary widely by state and employer, leaving many patients responsible for substantial out-of-pocket costs. The authors emphasize the importance of inclusive, evidence-based policies that expand equitable access to fertility care.

“IVF is essential medical care, and these findings show that Americans support both access to treatment and insurance coverage that puts it within reach,” said ASRM Chief Advocacy & Policy Officer Sean Tipton. “For too many patients, the ability to build a family still depends on their ZIP code, their employer, or their bank account. Comprehensive coverage would help ensure that more people can receive the care they need.”
