The American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) has named Kurt Barnhart, MD, MSCE as Editor in Chief of its flagship journal Fertility and Sterility. Barnhardt will begin his tenure July 1, 2021.
“We look forward to Dr. Barnhart’s editorial oversight and contributions to our esteemed journal,” said Dr. Ricardo Azziz, chief executive officer of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. “Fertility and Sterility is in its sixth decade of providing original articles of scientific excellence in our field, and we know Dr. Barnhart will continue its strong legacy and continue to evolve content as our field advances new research.”
Dr. Barnhart currently serves as New Media Editor for the journal. He is a past president of the Society for Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility and past board member of ASRM. He also serves as associate chief of Penn Fertility Care at the University of Pennsylvania where he also is the director of the Women’s Health Clinical Research Center and Vice Chair for Clinical Research.
Dr. Barnhart's research focuses on the novel preparation of biomarkers for disease processes, for use as predictors or diagnostic aids, as well as on efficacy and safety outcomes after clinical interventions. In total, Dr. Barnhart has been involved in more that 60 clinical trials, translational research, and outcomes studies in women's health. He is a graduate of Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and conducted his residency and his fellowship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
“Kurt served the journal well as our New Media Editor during his term, and it was a natural next step to keep him ‘in the family’ and have him serve as Editor in Chief,” said Samantha Pfeifer, MD, Chair of the ASRM Publications Committee. “His insights and instincts will help drive the future success of Fertility and Sterility.”
Hugh Taylor MD, ASRM President remarked, “On behalf of the Society, I’d like to thank the journal’s outgoing editors Craig Niederberger, MD and Anthony Pellicer, MD for their outstanding work. We are grateful for their service to the Society, and we look forward to their ongoing contributions. We also enthusiastically welcome our new editor to lead the ASRM's flagship journal.”
