ASRM CEO, Richard Reindollar, Send Letter Urging Alabama Governor Kay Ivey To Veto Abortion Criminalization Bill

Origin: ASRM Bulletin
ASRM CEO, Richard Reindollar, today sent an urgent letter to Alabama Governor Kay Ivey urging her to veto the bill seeking to criminalize abortion in Alabama. The letter is below.
The Honorable Kay Ivey
Governor, State of Alabama
Dear Governor Ivey,
I am writing on behalf of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) to urge you to veto HB 314 which criminalizes physicians’ efforts to provide needed medical care to their patients.
HB 314 is a blatantly unconstitutional effort to block my fellow Alabama physicians from being able to provide a medical therapy which the United State Supreme Court has ruled as legal throughout the country. Pregnancy termination is an important component of reproductive medical care and one that needs to be available to our patients.
I recognize the political and emotional power of the abortion issue. Nevertheless, in a pluralistic society, we must allow medical science and an individual’s conscience to guide these decisions. Politicians should not seek to manufacture their own facts or impose their own views on the entire state.
Our organization, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, is about to mark its 75th anniversary. We have been proudly headquartered in Birmingham our entire history. However, I fear we will come under enormous pressure from our membership to relocate if this bill becomes law.
I urge you to side with the women of Alabama and modern medical science and veto this bill.
Richard Reindollar, MD
CEO, American Society for Reproductive Medicine
