New Orleans, LA – Research presented at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine’s (ASRM) Scientific Congress examines the relationship between uterine fibroids and cardiovascular risk factors when diagnosis comes mid-life.

Researchers with the Study of Women’s Health Across the Nation (SWAN) examined prospectively the associations of hypertension, antihypertensive treatment, and cardiovascular risk factors with incidence of fibroid diagnosis in midlife. Over the course of their multi-year study, researchers state that the results indicate associations between hypertension and risk of newly diagnosed fibroids, which if causal could elucidate fibroid etiology and suggest new non-hormonal strategies to prevent fibroids.

Steven L Young, MD PhD, President of the Society for Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility stated, “This work assists us and our patients to better understand the full impact of uterine fibroids. It is well beyond just the reproductive system.”
