ASRM Responds to Senate’s Failure to Pass Access to Family Building Act

Statement attributable to Sean Tipton, Chief Advocacy and Policy Officer

February 28, 2024
For Immediate Release

Washington, DC – We are disappointed by the Senate’s failure to meet the moment and pass federal legislation protecting access to in vitro fertilization (IVF). We look forward to the opportunity to continue to work with our Senate champions, Sens. Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), Patty Murray (D-WA), and the 40-plus Democratic Senators who have signed onto the bill. We also thank our House champion Rep. Susan Wild (R-PA) and leaders in the House who continue to lead this charge. Together, we will continue to strengthen the Access to Family Building Act in direct response to the Supreme Court ruling in Alabama. Make no mistake, this is now a national cause. Politicians are advancing legislation in states other than Alabama that contains personhood language and jeopardizes the ability of hopeful parents to build the families of their choice. Building a family is a fundamental right of all people, no matter where they live.

Reproductive Rights and You

The U.S. Supreme Court’s opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization (597 U.S. __, 2022), overturned the nearly 50-year precedent set by Roe v. Wade (410 U.S. 113, 1973), which had recognized a constitutional right to abortion. The Dobbs decision has sparked a litany of changes in state laws across the nation, and more are expected.
