ASRM Calls on Congress to Approve VA Appropriations Bill
Jun 12, 2017
Origin: ASRM Press Release and Bulletin Volume 19, Number 18
Last night, the House Appropriations subcommittee with jurisdiction over the Department of Veterans Affairs unanimously approved a bill, without amendment, to fund the agency for the next fiscal year. Contained in the bill is a provision to extend access to IVF treatments for wounded veterans in need of this care. ASRM worked closely with Chairman Charlie Dent (R-PA) and Ranking Member Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL), to protect the provision. An extension is necessary given that the current appropriation allowing the VA to offer this benefit sunsets in 2018.
The full Appropriations Committee will consider the bill on Thursday, June 15.
ASRM issued the following press statement in advance of the subcommittee vote.
Statement attributable to Christos Coutifaris, MD, PhD, ASRM President-Elect
"We are pleased that Representative Charlie Dent, Chair of the Military Construction VA subcommittee, has offered a bill that continues a commitment to our wounded veterans by ensuring funding is available for the VA to provide infertility services for those who served our county and as a result are in need of this care. Our wounded warriors deserve the chance to be made whole when they return from service, and this includes the chance to have children. We commend Chairman Dent and Ranking Member Wasserman Schultz for their bipartisan effort and call on the Members of the subcommittee to pass this measure unaltered as the bill moves forward."
